Compulsory Conference

In order to facilitate the timely conclusion of a matter, the SAT may require people involved in the proceedings to attend a compulsory conference. The parties may request the SAT to make such an order.

At a compulsory conference, issues are identified and resolved before a final hearing.

When is a decision made to hold a compulsory conference?

A Tribunal member may at a directions hearing or later in the proceedings schedule a compulsory conference. The SAT will advise participants of the date, time and room number at the SAT offices.

What happens if I fail to attend the compulsory conference?

If you fail to attend, the member may strike absent parties from the proceedings or make a final decision and orders based on the information before him or her.

How does the conference end?

If a final settlement is reached, a settlement agreement shall be made and the SAT will make orders, where appropriate, to give it effect. If some, but not all, issues are resolved, an agreement will be made as to those issues resolved.

If the matter is not resolved, the SAT will give directions concerning its future conduct.

Can the Tribunal member continue dealing with my case?

The member who presides at a compulsory conference cannot take part in further proceedings related to the matter.

Where and when is the compulsory conference held?

The compulsory conference will usually be held at the SAT offices. The SAT will advise parties of the date, time and room number.
